A 23-year old woman in Niagara Falls was paralyzed after diving into a pool last summer. Her boyfriend’s actions after the accident have lit up iTunes and touched the hearts of many.“Being a girlfriend that can’t dance with him anymore, I can’t lay with him anymore, I can’t do anything.”It was a warm sunny day last summer when Vallary Halladay’s life changed forever. She dove into her boyfriend’s pool and hit her head on the bottom.“I went into fight mode where I wanted to start swimming, but I couldn’t, I realized I was sinking,” she explains. She had broken her neck and was paralyzed. At the time Halladay had only been dating Kirk Thomas for about a month, but they were already deeply in love.“I’d like to think it was as close as it comes to love at first sight,” says Thomas. They had spent hours talking about the future, going to Cuba and getting married. Now he does her makeup and helps with physiotherapy. For Halladay, things changed after the accident, but she didn’t want to hold Thomas back, so she tried to break up with him.“He didn’t sign up for this, so I didn’t want him to feel like he had to stay,” she says. But not only did he stay, he wrote her a love song.“I just started to write how I felt, and I couldn’t imagine my life without her.”With the help of a studio in St. Catharines, and encouragement from Halladay, Thomas recorded the song and put it on iTunes for $0.99 per download. The money will go to help pay for expensive renovations required before Halladay can go home from the hospital.“We have to do the whole upper floor, ramps, the bed, and the bathroom. At this rate we might have to redo the kitchen so I can get around.”Her wheelchair even comes with a hefty price tag of $30,000.Thomas’ song “Can’t Imagine” is available for download on iTunes.
“On their own, governments will not be able to save the world from major environmental disasters caused by ongoing climate change.” This warning was delivered by Professor Mohan Munasinghe during a speech at Vale’s International Seminar on Sustainable Development. The workshop, running until May 15 in the Brazilian cities of Belém and Rio de Janeiro, is being organised by the Vale Technology Institute (ITV). The consultation with the international scientific community will help guide the agenda of research work to be undertaken at the ITV research centre to be built in Belém, which will focus on research into sustainable development.Munasinghe, a Sri Lankan physicist who runs the Sustainable Consumption Institute at the University of Manchester, UK, and winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, highlighted the role of emerging countries in the fight against rising planetary temperatures. In his opinion, solutions that the world is hoping for in sustainable development and pollution control are likely to be developed in countries such as Brazil, India and China. He emphasised initiatives such as that taken by Vale, which through the ITV is supporting research on technology and projects to find ways of using natural resources without causing major environmental harm. This consultation with the international scientific community will help to guide the agenda of research work to be undertaken at the ITV research centre to be built in Belém, the capital of the state of Par, which will focus on research into sustainable development. In all, 30 researchers from 19 countries are participating in the workshop, including Munasinghe, one of the most renowned intellectuals in the environmental field. As a result of his work as Vice Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Munasinghe won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, together with former US president Al Gore, and other members of the IPCC.In Rio, three days of debates are being held with researchers discussing sustainable development-related issues and exploring how mining activities can contribute to the wellbeing of local communities, minimising the impacts caused by these operations. The researchers will also take part in a technical visit to Vale’s mines in Itabira and Brucutu in the state of Minas Gerais. ITV was created by Vale to co-ordinate the company’s science and technology activities and support the production of scientific research in Brazil.ITV’s Director, Luiz Mello, explained that the workshop is the institute’s first formal commitment to building a scientific research agenda and to collaborating with the academic community of Belém. Mello stressed the importance of Munasinghe’s talk. “Dr. Mohan is a renowned researcher who can make a contribution to ITV in Par by sharing his knowledge and experience gained from decades of study and research into climate change, an issue that is very important to the region, given that the Amazon plays a significant role in the planet’s climate,” he said.Mello also emphasised that, with the establishment of ITV, the state of Par will take a major step forwards in science and research. “In Par we will have a worldclass institute, a centre for research into sustainable development that will benefit from the work of 50 scientists and researchers, hired in Brazil and from abroad, to carry out studies on the environment and sustainable development.”The first of three ITV research centres will be built this year in the state of Par. The other two centres will be built in Ouro Preto (Minas Gerais), to specialise in mining, and Sâo Paulo, which will focus on innovations in energy. The centre in Belém, Par, will prioritise research on sustainable development. The site for the Par ITV center is currently being selected. The campus will feature infrastructure and laboratories to accommodate an initial group of around 50 researchers, administrative staff and students, giving a total of about 400 people. Naturally, the centre’s architectural design was created with sustainability in mind, taking into account land use issues, the use of rainwater and solar panels to generate power.Even before the centre is built, ITV’s initiatives to promote research in the state of Par have already begun: in 2008, ITV, the Par State Research Promotion Foundation (FAPESPA) and the State Development, Science and Technology Secretariat (SEDECT) awarded 84 scholarships for post-graduate studies in Par.The following year, ITV, FAPESPA and SEDECT launched a project to provide financial support to researchers conducting research on issues related to the mining industry in Par. In 2010, ITV signed an agreement with the state research promotion foundations of Par (FAPESPA), Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG) and Sâo Paulo (FAPESP) to invest R$120 million in scientific work in the fields of mining, energy, eco-efficiency and biodiversity, and ferrous products used in steelmaking.
There’s obviously going to be a lot of talk about Sean not being there, he is one of the best in the world. As for me, I just like to approach it in that, yes, he’s an unbelievable player but I like to think that I can add something different.“There are certain aspects of the game that I can bring, but he can’t. Rugby is horrible in that way, people get injured and you take your opportunity. For me, last week I just tried to give everything out there. I certainly didn’t leave much out there. Hopefully that can be enough, but we’ll just have to wait and see.”Henry is determined to enjoy every minute of the Six Nations. ©INPHO/Dan Sheridan. At the age of 29, Henry won his 10th cap against the Scots in Dublin. That encounter was Henry’s first start in the Six Nations; here is a man who has fought hard to make his way into international rugby. And still, as a mature, experienced player, he is learning.Keeping a close eye on refereeing trends at the top level of rugby is part of that study process, the research need to stay ahead. Henry has been adapting his game recently with that in mind, as match officials penalise tacklers for failing to roll away with greater frequency. “WE’RE FED UP of being an Irish team that performs one week and doesn’t the next. That’s certainly something that, as a group of players, we want to put to bed. We want to be a team that delivers every week, that puts in performances every week and gets results every week.”Chris Henry sums up the feelings of a rugby nation.Inconsistency has plagued Ireland for the last number of years, both in terms of results and performance levels. Having competently overcome a weak Scottish team in the opening round of this year’s Six Nations, Joe Schmidt’s men now have their sights set on taking down double champions Wales. One of the major stumbling blocks on the path in that regard will be what Henry describes as a “world class” back row. A key focus for Ireland will be “blasting them out” as Sam Warburton leads the attempts to steal possession at the breakdown.Openside flanker Henry may have a vital role to play in that battle, with his rucking ability having resulted in earning the Ulster man a starting place against Scotland last week ahead of Munster’s Tommy O’Donnell. That the number seven shirt was up for grabs at all is down to Sean O’Brien’s shoulder injury. The shadow of the Leinster flanker will loom larger if Ireland fail to beat Wales, but Henry says he hasn’t focused on the pressure of replacing one of Joe Schmidt’s leading players. “I think the biggest thing is that when you tackle, you make sure you get away from the contact area. If you look at a lot of the games last weekend, there was a lot of penalties from not being able to roll away. Sometimes it’s very hard if you’re tackling in a certain position, it’s nearly impossible to get out of there, but that is your responsibility as a tackler. That’s something that I’ve tried to work on, that if I am going low, I try to tackle so I can get out of there quickly. I think I gave away one penalty last weekend for sealing off in the ruck going forward, but I think apart from that as a whole we were pretty clean and that’s the way we want to be.”Henry cites that tight discipline as essential against Wales, particularly as getting on the wrong side of Englishman Wayne Barnes could be disastrous. With Leigh Halfpenny over the tee for Gatland’s side, there will be little room for error at the breakdown inside Ireland’s half. There are tactical, technical, selection, mental and positional concerns for the Ulsterman this week in the build-up but through it all, Henry remains focused on enjoying every moment of his privileged position.“I think any time I go out to play rugby, whether it’s for Ulster or Ireland, I do try to enjoy it. I think that’s probably come a wee bit with age, when you’re younger it sometimes can be a wee bit overwhelming. The occasion last week was just unbelievable. I absolutely loved it.“There’s a bit of pressure, but you want that as it gets the best out of you. Certainly I think I’ve always been a bit of a smiler and I suppose it’s just a great feeling to be out there. To get the best out of yourself, you’ve got to enjoy it as well.”Analysis: Peter O’Mahony steps up to fill in for missing O’BrienO’Donnell ready for another taste of ‘addictive’ Six Nations rugby
Catholic School Bans ‘Harry Potter’ Books Because SpellsToy Tuesday: The Best Animal Toys Stay on target Before watching Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in theaters come November, how about doing a Harry Potter rewatch?Starting Thursday, October 13, fans can watch all eight Harry Potter films in IMAX theaters for one week, where they’ll also be treated to a sneak peek of Fantastic Beasts. This means that you’ll be able to watch the first two films–Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets–in 2D IMAX for the first time.Luckily, unlike some other movie marathons, you don’t have to see every single film. There are four ticket packages available, including single admittance. You can also purchase day access, which’ll allow you to see some in a single day, four-show access, and festival access, meaning you can attend unlimited screenings. If you wanted to, you could just spend a week straight watching Harry Potter movies (although we wouldn’t recommend it).Prices are expected to vary by theater, so be sure to do research into your local theater before making any plans. The event is a great way for Warner Bros. to build up some hype for the new film, starring Eddie Redmayne, and also a way for Potterheads to brush up on their knowledge. You never know what facts or characters might cross over. After that, it’s just a month until Fantastic Beasts, which comes out on November 18.
With less than 100 days until Christmas, Whovians are getting a sneak peek at this year’s presents via a leaked holiday special story synopsis.Accidentally revealed by BBCShop.com, the Yuletide episode will reportedly feature a darker hue than previously expected.(Spoilers!)Two Doctors stranded in a forbidding snowscape, refusing to face regeneration. And a British army captain seemingly destined to die in the First World War, but taken from the trenches to play his part in the Doctor’s story. This is the magical last chapter in the Twelfth Doctor’s epic adventure. He must face his past to decide his future. And the Doctor will realize the resilience of humanity, discovering hope in his darkest frozen moment. It’s the end of an era. But the Doctor’s journey is only just beginning.Posted alongside the pre-order listing of the episode’s DVD, the summary has since been removed from the site. What does remain, however, is a hilariously scathing critique titled “How to ruin the return of the First Doctor,” penned by “The Real Thirteen”:“Oh, where to begin? Yes, I know I haven’t seen this yet, but that hardly matters. We all know how it ends: with the destruction of 50-plus years of storytelling at the altar of political correctness and Social Justice Warriors.“If you don’t know what I’m talking about, go ahead. Buy this thing,” the reviewer wrote. “I’m torn, because I want to see David Bradley pay the First Doctor, but I know it will irritate me because of how it will, inevitably, end. Hopefully, there will be a moment where I can just shut it off and not have to experience the travesty to come.“Boo.”Written by Steven Moffat and directed by Rachel Talalay, “Twice Upon a Time” marks the final chapter for much of the cast and crew, including showrunner Moffat, actor Peter Capaldi, and writer Mark Gatiss (who stars as said “British army captain”).Refusing to regenerate at the end of season 10 finale “The Doctor Falls,” the Twelfth Time Lord steps out of the TARDIS and into the snow, where he meets the First Doctor, portrayed by David Bradley.Together with some old friends—Ben Jackson (Jared Garfield), Polly Wright (Lily Travers), the deliciously daring Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), and maybe even former companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman)—the pair must save the world (naturally) before each takes a new shape: Bradley (as the late William Hartnell) into Second Doctor Patrick Troughton, and Capaldi into Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker.Tune in to BBC or BBC America on Dec. 25 to see Team TARDIS in action. Also, stock up on tissues, and expect the unexpected, as teased by Moffat during last week’s London Screenwriters’ Festival.“If you are sane and rational, kindness is by far the best path. There isn’t anything rational about being vile and awful and evil. It’s not actually a good strategy,” he told the crowd, as reported by Digital Spy.“Prepare for that to be contradicted on Doctor Who on Christmas Day.”Eek!Fans can already pre-order a copy of the “Twice Upon a Time” Blu-ray or DVD, set for release on Feb. 20, 2018.Editor’s Note: This story was updated on Sept. 19 to correct the source of the leak, BBCShop.com.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. Due to increasingly high fire danger, Longview Timberlands has closed public access to most of its forestland in Washington and Oregon, the company announced Wednesday. The closure means Longview Timberlands’ Washington property east of Interstate 5 won’t be open to any recreational activity. The company is closing all of its Oregon forestland. Longview foresters will be closing gates and posting notices at entry points this week, according to the company. Security patrols will also increase for the rest of the fire season.Warm, consistently dry weather in recent weeks has significantly raised fire danger in the Northwest, with crews already battling major blazes in some spots. The “Dollar Lake” fire near Mount Hood, Ore., has scorched more than 4,000 acres as firefighters struggle to contain it.Longview Timberlands owns and manages more than 600,000 acres of forestland in Washington and Oregon, including in Clark and Cowlitz counties.
LAUDERHILL, FLA. This is my baby,” she said. “She would sleep with me every day and night. She is so gone; I can’t smell her puppy breath anymore.”Investigators said Green fled on foot before police could catch him. The Raspberry Pi has already proven itself to be a very capable little and cheap PC. It runs Linux, can be used for development, surfing the web, and playing games. Those games include retro classics through the use of multiple emulatiors that have been ported for the board.A few weeks ago we saw a Macintosh Classic turned into a NES arcade by using a Raspberry Pi. In that project the guy used RetroPie to give a nice graphical front end to his new arcade machine. But there is now an alternative, and one that’s arguably much easier to use. It’s called Raspberry Pi Chameleon, and it consists of a remix of the Raspbian Linux image. The remix removes the X graphical environment and replaces it with a launcher dedicated to running a number of emulators. At the same time, the software used remains open source. The systems supported include the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, DOS, Windows 3.1, arcade games, Oric-1, Apple II, ScummVM, and the Atari 2600. And to use it, it’s simply a case of having a spare SD card and downloading the Raspberry Pi chameleon torrent to put on it.The version available at the moment is v0.1, so it’s likely the creator, Carles Oriol, will continue to update the functionality and add more retro system support to the line-up. And because the Raspberry Pi is so simple in its design, getting new versions means just replacing the image on your SD card.Keep an eye on how the project developers over at the official Raspberry Pi chameleon website

Lindsay Fendt/The Tico Times Though the game didn’t start until 2 p.m.,San Josefinos in Costa Rica’s capital city woke up to the sound of vuvuzelas. By the afternoon, Costa Rica’s first appearance in the quarterfinals of the World Cup had completely paralyzed the city.East of the capital in San Pedro, college students from the nearby University of Costa Rica gathered en masse at bar Terra U, where a line wrapped around the block to get in to the already packed two-story building. Overflow from the other bars flooded the streets of San Pedro, blocking cars and taxis from reaching the main road.“La Sele is getting better every time,” said 25-year-old Alexander Acevedo. “We are making rivals of giants, we are destroying world champions.” Sele fans packed bar Terra U in San Pedro to watch the Ticos take on the Dutch. Lindsay Fendt/The Tico TimesPolice dressed in full riot gear stood guard at the entrance to the capital’s traditional celebration spot, the Rotonda de la Fuente de Hispanidad, but frequently wandered from their post to stare at a large TV screen facing the road.Further west, in the city’s center, thousands of fans packed into the Plaza de la Democracia to watch the game on a big screen. A red, white and blue grim reaper stood with his scythe among the crowd, repeatedly shouting for the heads of the Dutch players. Another man in a pirate hat covered in voodoo dolls approached the screen, placing a live rooster on the stage as if offering it to the football gods. Lindsay Fendt/The Tico TimesDraped in flags and donning red La Sele jerseys, the fans watched as their team battled against a much bigger Dutch squad, holding them scoreless for an incredible 120 minutes of regular and overtime play. Before the game headed into extra time, violence erupted near the front of the Plaza de la Democracia. Three men fell to the ground after being stabbed by unknown assailants as police in riot gear streamed into the crowd, pushing fans into a wide semi-circle around the injured men. Most fans seemed unfazed by – or unaware of – the bloodied men laid out in the plaza, and continued cheering as the Ticos headed into a penalty shootout. Others, presumably close to the incident, left the plaza crying. Paramedics arrived on scene to carry out the injured fans on stretchers, and shortly after police retreated, the crowd rushed towards the stage to continue watching the game. The crowd in the Plaza de la Democracia goes crazy as the Costa Rican national soccer team heads into penalty kicks with Holland. Lindsay Fendt/The Tico TimesAs the game passed to penalty kicks, the plaza grew quiet. One fan crossed himself, evoking the divine, as tears silently rolled down his cheeks. As the first goal slid past substitute Netherlands goalkeeper Tim Krul, the crowd went wild. But when Ticos Bryan Ruiz and Michael Umaña missed their penalty shots, and Sele goalkeeper Keylor Navas was unable to add a save, there were loud groans.Defeated, some left the plaza. Others stood still, shocked. Three men near the stage broke out into tears. Many fans shouted, “¡Viva la Sele!” and then marched to the Rotonda de la Hispanidad to celebrate what has been an historic run.Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solís tweeted: “Undefeated! An entire country proud of #LaSele and the entire world recognizes the feat.”
