Bodies of three men found near boat at Big Bear Lake

first_imgBIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) — Three men who went night fishing on Big Bear Lake were found dead in the frigid water near their capsized boat early Friday, authorities said. The victims were all in their 70s and from San Diego County. A resident spotted a 15-foot aluminum boat in the water about 6 a.m. near Fawnskin on the north side of the mountain lake and called deputies, said San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire. Deputies notified lake patrol officials who found a body in the water about two hours later and located two other bodies a short time later, Wiltshire said. All were near the shore of the lake, which is at an elevation of about 6,700 feet in the San Bernardino Mountains. The boat was reported to have left shore about 11 p.m. Thursday with three people aboard, Wiltshire said. “We don’t know what happened to them,” Wiltshire said. The victims were identified as James Swanson, 73, Everett Richard Price, 76, and Romaine Maiefski, 70. Swanson and Price were from Escondido and Maiefski was from Oceanside. Weather was calm during the day Thursday but conditions changed in the evening as winds picked up, fog rolled in and snow began to fall, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Beavers. She said it was possible winds caused swells that rocked the boat, or that someone stood up and unbalanced the boat, dumping all into the cold water. The water temperature was 49 degrees, and under those conditions it would take about 15 minutes for hypothermia symptoms to set in, Beavers said. “It’s kind of a guess at this point if it was the weather or if one of the men possibly made a movement that caused the boat to capsize,” she said. “There were no witnesses or survivors, so we may never know.” Big Bear Lake is open to the public 24 hours a day, but is not actively patrolled, Beavers said. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. When we campaign for Fairtrade, we are thinking globally; when we buy local produce and services, we are acting locally and keeping profits in our community.”Local FÁS workers are going to help drape the town centre with Fairtrade cotton bunting, while some shops are busy preparing Fairtrade window displays for the big day. High school class is a real lifesaver

first_imgAccording to Potosky, the three fundamental parts of life are the artery, breathing and circulation. “I’d like to teach how valuable life is, how delicate it is. Also, you learn discipline. We learn CPR for three weeks and it takes perseverance to learn. There’s a responsibility that they must reach.” sang.lee@sgvn.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2393160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. But, having the power to do it is rewarding in itself, just knowing that someone walking by you is capable of rescuing you.” Students study procedures and watch videos before taking the skills portion of the CPR test. They must complete the written portion of the exam before the end of the school year on June 22. “I always believed that to be an expert at something, you have to be able to see, do and teach it,” said Potosky, a certified emergency response technician at Kaiser Permenante Medical Center in Baldwin Park. “Now that I’m able to do that, I know that I have my CPR down.” Each student exhibited his or her expertise in CPR on Bob by lifting his chin, breathing into his mouth, checking for life signs from the brachial artery, applying chest compressions and operating an automated external defibrillator. “It should be a required skill to graduate,” senior Sarah Shirden said. “Anything can happen, and you can be that person to save someone’s life.” POMONA – Michael Potosky rescues people for a living. But Bob is one patient who will never be rescued. He’s the top-of-the-line Laerdal mannequin purchased by Potosky to serve as a lifelike simulator for more than 100 Diamond Ranch High School students. “(Bob) still doesn’t have a pulse. No matter how hard you try, you’ll never get him back,” Potosky said. Potosky teaches four elective classes related to health careers through the Regional Occupational Program. Each student is required to take an American Heart Association cardiopulmonary resuscitation test. If they pass, they receive a CPR card, which certifies them for two years. last_img read more
