Stopping Messi not mission impossible for Man Utd, says Solskjaer

first_img0Shares0000MANCHESTER, United Kingdom, Apr 10 – Lionel Messi has a history of terrorising Manchester United but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes it is not impossible to stop the Barcelona star inflicting more damage in Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final.Messi scored in both of Barca’s Champions League final victories over United, in 2009 and 2011, and is hungry to win the competition for a fifth time after crashing out at the last eight for the past three seasons. The Argentine has been in majestic form again this season, scoring 43 goals in 40 appearances to put Barca in position for a third treble in a decade.“He is a fantastic player and will go down in history as one of the best individual players ever,” said United boss Solskjaer ahead of the first leg of the tie at Old Trafford.“He will be difficult to stop but it is never impossible. It’s not like it’s Messi against Manchester United.“There is (Luis) Suarez, (Philippe) Coutinho, (Ivan) Rakitic, (Arturo) Vidal, there are so many good players we can’t just focus on one player. We know we have to play against 11 of them.”Messi stated before the season even began that his primary target was taking the Champions League back to Catalonia after the disappointment of blowing a 4-1 first-leg lead to bow out to Roma last season.Salt has been rubbed into the wounds for Barca because Real Madrid have won the competition in each of the past three seasons.– Barcelona favourites –Barcelona’s Lionel Messi celebrates after scoring against Manchester United in the 2011 Champions League final © AFP/File / LLUIS GENEHowever, Madrid have failed to even reach the last eight this year and Barcelona are considered firm favourites to make the last four against a United side sitting sixth in the Premier League, despite an upturn in form since Solskjaer replaced the sacked Jose Mourinho in December. The Red Devils, though, showed what they are capable of in the last 16 by becoming the first side ever to come back from losing the first leg of a European Cup tie 2-0 at home, beating free-spending Paris Saint-Germain on away goals.“The game against PSG is a great example,” warned Barcelona defender and former United player Gerard Pique.“They (PSG) were better, but you cannot let United off the hook because they have a great team and a great history as they showed in Paris.“We learned (from Roma) that things happen, even if it seemed unimaginable that they will. We learned that you cannot let an opponent back into a tie if they are not killed off. That will help us for facing a team like United.“If at any point we can kill off the tie, we have to do it.”United have lost three of their four games since victory in the French capital to crash out of the FA Cup and lose ground in the race for a top-four finish in the Premier League.Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaks to the press ahead of his side’s Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona © AFP / Oli SCARFFBut Solskjaer says his players believe another Champions League scalp is possible against the Spanish champions.“Of course when you get Barcelona, with the quality of their team, we know we need to step up our game,” said Solskjaer.“We know we need to perform to our best levels, which we didn’t against PSG at home. The outcome of the second leg against PSG has given the players and supporters belief that the same is possible against Barcelona.”Solskjaer is hopeful that Marcus Rashford and Nemanja Matic will be fit despite failing to take a full part in training on Tuesday.Barca were given an injury boost with the news that Ousmane Dembele has been passed fit after a month out. However, the French World Cup player is not expected to start, with coach Ernesto Valverde saying he does not want to take the risk of aggravating his hamstring problem.0Shares0000(Visited 3 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Liverpool’s ‘brilliant’ 2019 just a building block for Klopp

first_imgLiverpool have now won 18 of their first 19 league games of the season and lost just once in the calendar year in the league, on top of winning the Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.“2019 was brilliant but it’s not important because we count seasons, not years, so the 2019/20 season is not over,” said Klopp.“We are halfway there, we still have 19 games to play and probably 18 or 19 of them will be like this tonight, for different reasons.“Who cares about points in December? We just created a basis which we will work with from now on, that’s all.”– Fuming at VAR –Wolves were angry even before the VAR controversies as the Premier League Christmas scheduling meant they travelled to Anfield just 45 hours after a thrilling 3-2 win over Manchester City.In the match they were left fuming at the two calls that went against them in quick succession towards the end of the first half.Mane swept home his 14th goal of the season from Lallana’s knockdown with his shoulder and referee Anthony Taylor’s initial decision was overturned. However, Wolves were unhappy that another claim for handball against Virgil van Dijk earlier in the move was not checked.Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo was booked for his protests at two VAR reviews that went against his side © AFP / Paul ELLISWolves’ frustration was compounded in first-half stoppage time when Pedro Neto’s equaliser was ruled out.Jonny was adjudged to be offside by the tiniest of margins in the build-up to add to a number of Premier League goals over the past two days ruled out for the most marginal of offside calls.“Anfield is amazing but they were celebrating a non-goal. It doesn’t make sense. The referee should sustain his decision,” said Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.“The VAR referee is miles away taking decisions on a lot of things happening here. Who is inside the game? Who feels the intensity and the flow? The referee here.”Nuno was booked among the Wolves protestations, but the Portuguese coach’s decision to start with top scorer Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore on the bench meant he had weapons up his sleeve come the second half.Traore’s pace was unleashed on the hour mark and Jimenez followed shortly after, but only after Diogo Jota’s fierce strike forced Alisson Becker into a smart save. The visitors had lost just once in their previous 14 league games to move into contention for a top-four finish and they did not go down without a fight in the final stages.“If it would be easy to win that number of games a lot more teams would have done it,” added Klopp.“It is not easy and you have to fight with all you have. Sometimes we have more and sometimes less and the boys do that all the time, so I couldn’t be more proud of what they did again. To get that result over the line is just impressive.”Jimenez had the best chance to claim an equaliser, but was denied by a block from Joe Gomez before Joao Moutinho, Romain Saiss, Ruben Vinagre and Traore all fired off target.0Shares0000(Visited 18 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Sadio Mane (left) celebrates the only goal as Liverpool beat Wolves 1-0 © AFP / Paul ELLISLIVERPOOL, United Kingdom, Dec 29 – Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists the European champions must build on a “brilliant” 2019 to turn a 13-point lead at the top of the table into a first Premier League title in 30 years.Klopp’s men were not at their flowing best and needed the help of two VAR reviews to continue their relentless march towards the title with a 1-0 win over Wolves on Sunday.last_img read more

first_imgA Convoy businessman has again warned that he will encourage hauliers to bring the country to a standstill if the new Government does not listen to their demands.John McLaughlin, of JML Transport, has said he has spoken to dozens of other truckers who have agreed to blocks ports and roads unless action is taken within three weeks of the new Government taking office tomorrow. His pledge comes as petrol hits an all-time high of more than €1.50 per litre at pumps across the country. Mr McLaughlin, who led the recent protest from Letterkenny to Dail Eireann to protest about taxes on fuel, has already met with Taoiseach-elect Enda Kenny when he visited Donegal the day before the recent election. On that occasion Mr McLaughlin outlined his concerns to the Fine Gael leader and told him he was seeking an urgent meeting if he got into office.Mr McLaughlin has now reminded the new Government that he will take action unless the proposed meeting does not take place with the three week timeframe.“It will take us a day or tow to organise it but I can guarantee people that we will block roads and block ports unless we are listened to. “This is not a selfish act on behalf of hauliers. This action is being taken on behalf of the entire population. We cannot just sit back and allow fuel prices to go through the roof.“Everyone is suffering and people are now spending more on their cars than they are feeding their children. It just can’t go on.“We will block every road and every port unless the new Government meets wit us and takes us seriously,” he said.EndsCONVOY HAULIER WARNS HE WILL BLOCK PORTS AS PETROL HITS €1.50 was last modified: March 8th, 2011 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgCROOK FRANCOIS de Dietrich today issued a statement from his secret hideaway – but didn’t say if he would be handing himself into the cops. The on-the-run French fraudstar swindled millions of euros out of investors in a dodgy scam. The UK Financial Services Authority swooped on more than €20M of that cash last year. And the convicted criminal once based in Ballybofey is facing 18 months behind bars for repeated contempt of a Belfast court order for failing to reveal his worldwide assets. A warrant has been issued for his arrest. There’s just one problem – the crook is in hiding!Today he issued a statement via his lawyers in Belfast in which he claimed he was innocent of any dodgy activity….and DISCRIMINATION!!!And he said that nothing was his fault – it was all the fault of the FSA!!! The fraudster said: “In response to continued media speculation surrounding our ongoing dispute with the FSA we now wish to make the following facts known to interested parties.“Our position in relation to this matter has not changed since the charges were first levied against us. We stand firm in strenuously denying the claims of the FSA which have been magnified in various quarters, not least the media.“We are actively pursuing our defence to the allegations, and the negative implications these have had on a number of levels.“We are extremely confident that in due course, the FSA and sections of the media will themselves have many questions to answer.“We are acutely aware that there may be a racial motive behind this entire investigation – an INVESTIGATION ONLY, which has resulted in harassment, defamation of character, libel, slander, innuendo not to mention serious financial hardship for so many. “Far from hiding and refusing to deal with the issues, as portrayed in sections of the media, we are at present actively conducting our own intensive investigations.“This has a twofold strategy. Firstly, we are adamant that we will continue to fight back vigorously against the sanctions imposed by the FSA.“And secondly, we have established our own course of action to commence proceedings against certain journalists, media outlets and others who have inaccurately reported aspects of this case.“We also feel it important to reveal the truth about our relationship with the FSA. Contrary to the image being portrayed via the media, we are not in fact being elusive and uncooperative. “In fact, we would like the public to know that ETIC Solutions, through our team of representatives, have actually made countless attempts to meet with, cooperate with, and even make additional funds available to, the FSA, so that this matter may reach a more rapid conclusion in the best interests of all stakeholders.”The crook went on to make a number of defamatory claims about respected staff at the FSA which cannot repeat for legal reasons. He did add: “We conclude by stating to anyone with an interest in this matter, that we will leave absolutely no stone unturned in our own attempts to bring a satisfactory resolution to this entire case.”The fraudster made no mention of his prison sentence.CROOK FRANCOIS: I’M INNOCENT, HONESTLY! was last modified: March 23rd, 2011 by gregShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgPICTURE SPECIAL BY KELLY O’SULLIVAN: In almost perfect conditions (apart from the drizzle) more than 300 people turned out for the annual RNLI New Years Day Swim in Mountcharles.Adding greatly to the event was the presence of Tommy Byrne of the Big Jigs band who had a mini hooley going belting out tunes on his bag pipes and Mark Padley Cross Chanel Swimmer from the UK who was holidaying in the area. The event was organised by Donegal Town RNLI which is one of the most active fundraising RNLI groups in Ireland raising €20,000 for the Lifeboats in 2013. Donegal Town RNLI PRO Paul O Sullivan said ” In spite of recent adverse media coverage for some charities, the RNLI is a “top up” free organisation. We receive no statutory State funding. The 2,000 crew members of our 56 Lifeboats get no wages and nor expenses.Treasurer John McNeil said that ” 2013 was a great year for us, we raised €20,000 and that excludes today’s event” Audrey Irwin, a stalwart of the RNLI said, “one man handed me three €50 notes”, he’s here every year”John Darch, Chairman was equally delighted with the turnout. ” When you’re completely dependent on the weather, it’s great when everything goes well. We would like to thank the local communities for their continued support of the RNLI and wish everyone a Happy New Year”. Jackie Irwin, Secretary paid tribute to the local media who played a huge success in the success of the event.
