IT may have snowed from the heavens in Letterkenny for Christmas but the local Chamber of Commerce has just announced record sales of its Shop LK vouchers. Not even the icy footpaths or frozen roads could keep people from supporting local businesses as they spent more than €160,240 worth of vouchers in November and December. The splurge represents a massive 48% increase in sales of the vouchers and a record since the initiative began. Chamber President Patrick McGinley said the figures were extraordinary. “Last year total sales from November 09 to October 10 stood at a record high of €207,000. However this Christmas season has exceeded our expectations and this amazing increase of 48% is a real shot in the arm for Letterkenny.“This is money that can only be spent here in the town and it contributes to supporting these outlets and most importantly supporting local jobs.” He continued “The Shop LK initiative offers local consumers an opportunity to support their local town in a really tangible way. We have had increasing sales year on year and the outlets involved in the initiative get real benefits. “Many other towns have now developed local shopping initiatives but Letterkenny Chamber started Shop LK well before the recession and over the years it has caught the imagination of the general public.“ Letterkenny provides something unique not found in neighbouring towns and cities – a main street with many independent traders, a local town feel with high street names, a clean well kept town, ample and reasonably priced parking close to the shopping areas and not least helpful and friendly staff who will go that extra mile to give customers exactly what they need. The “Shop LK – Love Shopping Letterkenny” brand helps to underpin all that is good about shopping in Letterkenny. The Chamber makes no money from the sale or redemption of vouchers so every cent brought in through Shop LK is invested back into the promotion of the brand throughout the year. Through the Shop LK initiative Letterkenny Chamber has always advocated the principles of keeping it local. The brand and the vouchers are a way of celebrating all that is good in Letterkenny. Consumers now have a great deal of choice right here in Letterkenny with excellent value every day across a range of products. Shopping in Letterkenny is hassle free with lots of cheap and convenient parking, lots of places to eat and relax and less money to spend on petrol. All in all the shopping experience here in Letterkenny is friendly, convenient and hassle free. Commenting on the increase Toni Forrester Chamber Chief Executive said “We knew sales were increasing this year but we were cautious until we saw the final figure. The Chamber office was selling vouchers every day in the run up to Christmas with staff just about keeping up with the demand.“Vouchers were bought by businesses as tax efficient bonuses, by organisations as prizes and by the general public who have really taken this initiative to their hearts. Over the last two years we have noticed that the range of people buying the vouchers has widened as people like the idea of a voucher and many comment on the idea that they are supporting the local community. “Letterkenny Chamber could not run this highly successful initiative without the support of FAS community employment programme through which the Chamber is staffed. It is the frontline staff in the Chamber that provide the much needed resources throughout the year but most especially at these busy periods and the support of FAS is very much appreciated. “ The Chamber President finished by saying “with increases in the region of 48% we are optimistic that sales will increase throughout the year and we are well on our way to selling the first million in vouchers. This is all great news for the 85 Shop LK members and for Letterkenny as a town”. Cape Town City – Bidvest Wits Preview: Benni McCarthy gunning for fifth win over Gavin Hunt Phumzile Ngcatshe Journalist Last updated 1 year ago 18:24 24/2/2018 Backpagepix The Citizens will look to continue their dominance over the Clever Boys Cape Town City will play host to Bidvest Wits in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) match at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday. With the 1-0 win for City in the PSL first round still fresh in Wits’ minds, the Johanesburg side will head to the Mother City in search of revenge.Lehlohonolo Majoro netted the only goal in the league match held at Bidvest Stadium back in August 2017 and that is the result which makes this encounter a highly anticipated one. Walker to the rescue but City sweating on Ederson injury ahead of Liverpool clash Out of his depth! Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp The Ladybrand-born hitman has now switched allegiances in favour of the reigning PSL champions and that also throws spice in the clash. With the Clever Boys out to avoid their fifth loss in all competitions against the Benni McCarthy-coached side, Majoro will hope to score against his former employers.Apart from the league defeat in the reverse fixture, Wits suffered three losses against City in the MTN8 Cup and Nedbank Cup competitions. However, a look at their recent run in 2018, Gavin Hunt’s men have only suffered one loss in 2018 which came against their hosts in the Ke Yona and will want to avoid any slip ups as far as their resurgence is concerned. They started their title defence campaign sitting at the bottom of the table and are now moving up the log standings, having beaten Bloemfontein Celtic, Golden Arrows, SuperSport United twice, drew against Kaizer Chiefs and lost to Free State Stars.Occupying the 11th spot on the table with 25 points from 21 games means their relegation concerns are eased for now, but their mission is to keep collecting maximum points.Following their Ke Yona loss, the Telkom Knockout Cup champions went on to bag a win over Mauritian side, Pamplemousses, in the CAF Champions League at home but lost away as they reached the next stage of the tournament. For the hosts, McCarthy has revealed his ambitions regarding this clash and it’s nothing but a win over his mentor, Hunt. While Benni insists they are still firmly in the title race, mathematics show that they have to fight harder and beat their visitors. The Citizens are slowly losing the title race as they sit at number six with 31 points on the standings and a win is what will revive their aspirations this weekend.Ahead of this encounter, the Wafa Wafa finalists lost 1-0 to fellow challengers, Kaizer Chiefs last weekend, but are through to the CAF Confederation Cup first round after beating Swaziland’s Young Buffaloes over a two-legged affair. With a lot at stake for both sides in the clash, there a less doubts that there will be a winner at the iconic Cape Town Stadium on Saturday evening, February 24. read more

Well, it turns out that the Barcelona star wears a lot of different boots. The Argentina captain is widely considered to be one of the greatest footballers of all time and he has won four Champions League titles during his career, as well as eight La Ligas. One of Adidas’ star athletes, he is kitted out by the sportswear giants, who have invested heavily into crafting boots worthy of his abilities. Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp So what sort of footwear does a five-time Ballon d’Or winner use on the pitch? Goal takes a look at Messi’s current boots, as well as some of the best he’s used in the past.Barca breakthrough in Nike bootsGiven that he is now the top asset in Adidas’ glittering roster of footballers it may be hard to believe that Messi originally favoured Nike footwear. He wore Nike’s Tiempo boots as he starred in Argentina’s successful 2005 Under-20 World Cup campaign and also wore the famous Mercurial Vapor and T-90 at different stages. At the time, Messi was playing alongside Ronaldinho, who was – and still is – one of Nike’s biggest stars, and the precocious Argentine was tipped as the Brazilian’s heir in Catalunya.A certain Cristiano Ronaldo was also making waves at Manchester United while donning the ‘swoosh’ during that period. However, Nike were denied a marketing dream team as Adidas ultimately lured Messi away from the embrace of their rivals and into the arms of the brand with the three stripes by offering him a more lucrative sponsorship deal. The rest, as they say, is history.Adidas F50 TUNiTAfter firmly nailing his colours to the Adidas mast, Messi was soon seen wearing the brand’s footwear on pitches in Spain, Europe and across the globe.Around that time, the Predator series of boots had been popularised by the likes of Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham, but Adidas were beginning to explore new lines of design. Messi’s speed, guile and all-round trickery fitted perfectly with the brand’s new F50 design, which was built for players with that particular style of play. From 2006 on, he generally wore the F50 TUNiT boot as he cemented his reputation as one of the best players in the world.Adidas F50iThe year 2009 was an incredibly successful time for Messi as he won a treble with Barcelona and he did so while wearing the blue F50i boots he helped Adidas launch. The Argentine scored Barca’s second goal in the final of the Champions League against Manchester United and he famously celebrated by taking off his boot and kissing it.The year was topped off as he picked up his first ever Ballon d’Or, leading Adidas to explore new gold-tinted boot designs for their prize asset.Adidas F50 AdizeroAs Messi’s star continued to rise, Adidas eventually started to craft boots specifically for the Barca talisman, with the new designs featuring his own personal branding.Messi clearly felt that the F50 style suited him as he stuck with them in their various incarnations for the guts of a decade. Some of the more memorable versions include the 2012 white and gold F50 Adizero boots, which cleverly acknowledged the Argentine’s three Ballons d’Or wins (2009, 2010 and 2011) and featured the Messi logo on the heel.By this time, the F50 Adizero design had migrated the stripes to the back end of the boot instead of the front and, later that year, Messi could be seen wearing a striking silver and orange version of the boots. In the lead up to the 2014 World Cup Adidas opted to make some changes to their signature F50 boots and, of course, Messi was the main man to promote them. The main design for the new F50s at the tournament was white with black and orange markings, similar in style to the Adidas Brazuca ball that was in use. But, as was becoming the norm in the world of football boots, there was plenty of tinkering.A variety of different versions of the Adizero boots appeared throughout 2014, with Adidas even producing a unique multi-coloured design for Messi’s birthday, which took place during the World Cup in Brazil. The Adizero F50 boots remained Messi’s favoured footwear after the tournament, but he began wearing the newer monotone coloured style instead.Adidas Messi 15 & Messi 16In 2015 Adidas launched an all-new range of Messi-inspired boots aptly named ‘Messi 15’ and they were regularly updated with various new colours for different occasions. For example, the brand marked the occasion of the Argentine’s fifth Ballon d’Or win by introducing a fresh platinum look.Throughout 2015 and early 2016, being the brand ambassador he is, Messi wore the different Messi 15 designs brought out by Adidas. The Messi 15 boots ranged in colours, from black and red to lime and red, as well as the aforementioned platinum editions.Eventually Adidas and Messi moved on and the Messi 16 boots were launched the following year featuring a more metallic look that gave them a different, shiny appearance.Like their predecessors, the Messi 16 boots were updated regularly, coming in a long list of different colourways and the Argentine would often mix things up.For example, he may have worn a lime green and black style while playing for Barca, but favour a silver and blue style when representing his country.Messi’s current boots – Adidas Nemeziz Messi is currently using Adidas’ Nemeziz series of boots and has been doing so since 2017 when the range was initially launched. The Barca star actually has his own particular design in the range, simply known as ‘Nemeziz Messi’, which incorporates his name into the upper of the boot on the sides and top. They have come in different colour schemes and Messi initially played games wearing the white style with black and orange features. He then moved on to the limited edition Argentina-inspired version, which are white and sky blue in colouring, a nod to the country’s famous albiceleste national flag and team shirts.Towards the end of 2017, the Argentine tended to favour the black, gold and orange Skystalker Nemeziz style. However, he helped Adidas to launch an new design in early 2018, featuring a silver, black and blue colour scheme.Since January, Messi has mainly worn the newest edition, but he has occasionally mixed it up.At the time of writing, the newest Adidas Nemeziz Messi boots are on the market at £249.95, but the Argentina-inspired versions can be picked up at a reduced price of £109.98.With the 2018 World Cup fast approaching, if recent history has been anything to go by, it won’t be long before Adidas launch their next Messi-inspired boot

Manchester United Man Utd Team News: Injuries, suspensions and line-up vs Liverpool Kris Voakes Man Utd Correspondent Last updated 1 year ago 15:10 10/3/2018 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(2) Catherine Ivill Manchester United Premier League Manchester United v Liverpool Liverpool Everything you need to know ahead of the Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Saturday With Manchester United fans still scraping themselves off the ceiling after the thrill of their late, late show in the 3-2 comeback win over Crystal Palace on Monday, they now ready themselves for the visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford which will decide which team takes second place going into the last eight games of the season.Jose Mourinho’s side have now come from behind to pick up maximum points in their last two fixtures, but they may well have to raise their game a level against their fierce old rivals if they are to record a third successive victory. They do at least have the knowledge that they are now nine points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea so it would take quite a collapse to fail to make it to the Champions League places at the end of the campaign, but United fans, players and management alike will want nothing less than a top-two finish, having been in first or second place for the entire season so far. Walker to the rescue but City sweating on Ederson injury ahead of Liverpool clash Out of his depth! Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp MAN UTD INJURIESHaving been without seven first-team players at Selhurst Park on Monday, United will be hoping that Anthony Martial at the very least may be able to make it for Liverpool’s visit. The Frenchman missed the trip to south London due to a knock, but could be back in contention this weekend.Ander Herrera remains unavailable due to the muscle injury he aggravated in the Champions League clash with Sevilla, while Daley Blind sits out once more as he continues his rehab from an ankle problem.Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones have both missed out with knocks in recent weeks but Jose Mourinho will be hoping that at least Rojo might make it for Saturday.Marouane Fellaini is edging towards a return, but probably won’t be fully fit until Swansea City visit Old Trafford at the end of March. Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s comeback appears to depend entirely on the player himself following ACL trouble, with Mourinho explaining recently: “Is he injured? No. Does he feel totally happy, ready and convinced that he’s in a condition to help the team in this moment? No.”MAN UTD SUSPENSIONSUnited have no suspension issues, and Liverpool also have a full squad in terms of disciplinary absences. However, Emre Can has nine domestic bookings this season, meaning another booking before round 33 of the Premier League campaign will lead to him being suspended.MAN UTD POTENTIAL STARTING LINE-UPJose Mourinho could look to make a couple of changes as he attempts to arrest the recent trend of slow starts. Marcus Rashford’s high-impact display off the bench against Crystal Palace may well have won him a starting place in the mind of his manager, while the Portuguese could also have been persuaded by the second-half entrance of Juan Mata.Eric Bailly could step in at the back after Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof had a rough hour to start Monday’s game, and Scott McTominay might find himself overlooked after an under-par 45-minute showing at Palace.Alexis Sanchez’s starting position will be the most fascinating selection issue though, with the Chilean a possible starter in the No.10 position in which he finished the win on Monday.LIVERPOOL TEAM NEWSMost teams would suffer a huge slump after losing £142 million worth of talent, but Liverpool have barely broken stride since selling Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January. The Reds are now hot on the heels of United in the race to finish second behind Manchester City, and their forward line of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane has collected 68 goals and 31 assists between them so far this term.Jurgen Klopp’s main injury concern is skipper Jordan Henderson, who limped away from the 0-0 draw with Porto in midweek which completed a 5-0 aggregate Champions League win. However, Henderson insisted afterwards that he should be fine and explained it was nothing more than a dead leg which had led to him leaving Anfield with wrapping on his right leg.Liverpool arrive at Old Trafford boasting a run which has seen them lose only twice in their last 27 fixtures in all competitions. During that time they have scored 75 goals to 23, and ended the unbeaten Premier League record of runaway leaders City.TV CHANNEL & KICK-OFF TIMEThe match at Old Trafford kicks off at 12:30 GMT on Saturday, with live coverage available in the UK on Sky Sports Premier League beginning at 11:30.BEST OPTA MATCH FACTS This will be the 170th meeting in league competition between these sides – Manchester United have won 67 to Liverpool’s 55 (47 draws). Two of the last three league meetings between these sides have ended goalless – just one of the previous 49 between them in the top-flight had failed to produce a goal. Manchester United have won 10 of their last 13 Premier League home games against Liverpool, losing in 2008-09 and 2013-14, and drawing last season. This fixture has seen 16 red cards in the Premier League – only the Merseyside derby has produced more in the competition (21). No side has scored more away league goals in the big five European leagues this season than Liverpool (34, level with Lyon). Manchester United have won three of their seven games against fellow ‘big six’ sides in the Premier League this season (W3 D1 L3), one more than they managed in the whole of last season (W2 D4 L4). Romelu Lukaku has scored 99 Premier League goals; if he scores in this game he’ll be the 5th youngest player to reach 100 in the competition, and the second player to score his milestone goal against Liverpool (after Harry Kane earlier this season). Jose Mourinho has won only one of his eight meetings in all competitions with Jurgen Klopp (D4 L3), with his Real Madrid side beating Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in a Champions League semi-final second leg match (still lost 3-4 on aggregate). Mo Salah has scored in each of his last five Premier League games; only Daniel Sturridge (8 in February 2014) and Michael Owen (6 in April 2003) have scored in more consecutively for Liverpool in the competition. I didn’t see it but I did have that confirmed, which was part of the reason why they thought people in the directors’ box should go inside to save any more problems like that.”I saw some families leaving because the youngsters were frightened.
